You can’t simply drive up to Matilija Dam anymore. On the morning of February 28, a lucky caravan slipped through a locked gate off Highway 33, wound past the ruins of the old Matilija Hot Springs Resort, and parked in the canyon below a concrete wall that has been waiting, in one way or another, to come down for eight decades. The sun was already insistent at 9 AM. Much of the group arrived dressed for safari.
